Genesis ENews Extended MailChimp

Using the Genesis E-News Extended Plugin with MailChimp

Raise your hand if you have an email newsletter signup form on your website (or want to have one)!

Keep your hand raised if your site runs on the Genesis Framework.

Still with me? I’d like to introduce you to the perfect solution for Genesis users who need a newsletter signup. It’s called the Genesis E-News Extended plugin by Brandon Kraft. When it comes to functionality and matching your theme’s style, this plugin integrates beautifully with StudioPress themes and can be used with MailChimp, Aweber, Constant Contact, and more.

Here’s a 10 minute screencast showing you how to set up the Genesis E-News Extended widget to work with MailChimp.

If you have trouble with the video player, you can watch directly on YouTube.

Your video tutorials are great, Carrie !

I remember how I struggled to integrate my optin form into my blog using ENEWS + Aweber, the first time…

The next time I’ll need to do it, I’ll go through your screencast 😉

eNews Extended, technically, works on any theme. The kicker (pro or con depending on your perspective) is that no styling is included, relying on the StudioPress convention for the eNews space (#subbox for the e-mail field, .enews and .enews-widget classes to wrap the plugin, etc) so it is overall “hot swappable” with any SP theme.

So, if you’re looking for solution with another theme that doesn’t require wresting with styles shipped with the plugin, eNews is an option too!

Thanks, David. Glad to know there’s a new MailChimp plugin as the old one was a little clunky. I also use the Gravity Forms + MailChimp approach on some sites.

I have used Brandon’s Genesis E-News Extended plugin for about 6 months now.

It works very well with MailChimp and, I have had very few readers unsubscribe.

I believe it is a very professional solution and, for a small subscriber base it is free!

    Thanks Carrie for documenting this.

It will be very beneficial to lots of bloggers as Google is wanting to deactivate its RSS reader.

Thanks for taking the time to put this together. I was following Brandon’s and… whoops, new mail chimp design. Thankfully, you came to the rescue. –

Oh, thank you! I just switched from Catalyst to Genesis 2.0 and am excited about this plugin (and the framework in general)! Do you know if there’s a way to style/force it to line up horizontally underneath the header? I fancy myself a pretty successful amateur-css-tinkerer (with a lot a Google searching), but this one stumps me!

  5. says

Carrie – – I swear, every single time I have a question on genesis and I google it, your name pops up with the solution! Thank you so much :)

  6. says

Great Video, Thanks, I just installed genesis and the Enews extender and email validation is not popping up. It just links to the mailchimp site. Any one got any tips?

Everything is working fine except when a user fills out their email address, the mail chimp screen opens…but its not the confirmation, its the same form saying “blank email address” Only when the user enters a second time on the mail chimp page does it work and ask them to confirm…

Thanks for this great video! My question, though, is how do I get people to subscribe right there rather than have a new window open up to my mail chimp subscribe form? Thanks!

    • says

If you’re seeing the MailChimp form (asking them to submit again, likely asking for their e-mail address again), you have the wrong e-mail form field set in the widget options.

Within MailChimp, there’s an option to change the “thank you” page, I believe it is called, so after someone submits on your form, it would take them to another one of your pages if the subscribe was successful.

Thanks so much! That screencast certainly saved me a ton of time trying to figure out why my Mail Chimp wasn’t syncing up properly with the webform on my site!

  10. says

Hey, nice tutorial and blog – bookmarked. I was wondering if you could please help me with another thing that I want to put on my Gensis powered website. My question is, how did you added the related posted below social sharing buttons here (probably you’re using Jetpack sharing)? Can you please share which plugin and setting you’re using? I want the related posts to be shown exactly like yours and the place should be same as well. I’m using Elven40 pro theme btw, possible?

    • says

      Hi Ali,
I’m using the nrelate plugin for related posts + Jetpack sharing. I’m not using any special code to direct location, other than setting both to display after post content.

      • says

Thanks for the response Carrie, I’m using same but my related posts show under the post content, not after the post inf (tags, category etc) and social sharing… Thank you anyway!

Thanks so much for the tutorial, however, when I try entering an email address on my form and click the button, it takes me to the mailchimp form indicating there was an error (email address field was blank) to enter the email address again. What am I doing wrong? If the email address field was not empty to begin with, why is it redirecting me to enter it again? Thanks.

Hi Carrie, Do you know why Genesis ENews extender might not be working w/ some of the new mobile-friendly themes? I followed the directions in this video for the “Sixteen Nine” theme and see no text fields; the “submit” button is off to the side – not below other fields. In short, everything is haywire. Any thoughts?
    Thanks, Lili

Hey Lili – I’m not sure. If those theme demos are using Genesis Enews, check to see that you’re setting it up per the theme setup instructions. If you are setting it up per instruction for a specific theme and it still looks wonky, then chances are you have some weird styles coming in from somewhere else (either customizations you’ve made or possibly another plugin).

  13. says

Carrie, as always, thanks for the detailed walk-thru’s! I have used them time and time again.

Is there a way to disable the double opt-in feature when using mailchimp + E-news extended? I have seen some ways to edit code with just a mailchimp plugin, but prefer to use the genesis plugin.

Any help would be much appreciated!
